Joan F. Brock
ROCHESTER - Joan F. Brock of Rochester died peacefully at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital after brief complications from heart surgery. Joan was born in Woburn, Mass. to Arthur G. Fuller and Lois (Nutter), the first of four siblings. She grew up in Stoneham, Mass., but was fond of her grandparents' home in Windsor Locks, Conn. where her grandfather was pastor for several decades and she worked briefly in the tobacco fields. After attending Cushing Academy, Joan received a medical secretary degree from Westbrook College, each experience producing several lifelong friendships, experiences and stories. Joan worked for several medical offices starting with old-school medicine doing most everything to assist a prominent Wakefield, Mass., doctor, to later include rural medicine, ophthalmology and dental practices.
In 1953, Joan married Edward Peter Brock Jr. of Danvers, Mass., and chose Melrose, Mass., as their home until 1972, when the family moved to a chicken farm in Limerick, Maine. In the interim, the family grew to include four boys and the family enjoyed a summer home in Shapleigh, Maine, where many friendships and activities ensued.
The chicken farm in Limerick provided Joan, Edward and their brood a five-year journey into tending to 20,000 laying hens. Joan found outlets in family gatherings, along with a gifted talent for spinning, weaving and knitting, always striving for best-in-show projects - sweaters, napkins, clothing, afghans, etc., providing a social and creative outlet, and at times, a small extra-income. Joan also enjoyed traveling and building a significant vegetable garden each season with her husband. Some grandkids later and the passing of Ed in 1996, Joan to move to Dover, where she rekindled lifelong friendships and started new ones. Joan moved to Rochester in 2006, living with her youngest son David since 2010.
She is predeceased by her husband Edward and son, Paul Nutter Brock and is survived by her sons Deane of Casitas Springs, Calif., and Edward III (wife Mei Feng and grandson Adam) of Park City, Utah. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and family, William Brock, of Dennis, Mass., grandchildren Sarah and Josh Hebert (greats Caleb and Jake), of North Berwick, Maine, Tyler of Wells, Maine and Sam of Wisconsin.
