John J. Calo SFC USA Retired

ROCHESTER - John J. Calo SFC USA Retired 69 years old of Rochester, passed away on May 14, 2014, down in Naples, Florida, a place he wanted to be. He fought a courageous 6 month battle with Lung Cancer. John was born in Lynn, Mass., on January 27, 1945. He was the son of Guilliomo and Margaret Calo. He spent 20 years in the Army retiring in 1982. He served in Vietnam, Korea and many other places.

John met his wife Joan while they where stationed together in Belgium. They married August 10, 1978 in Copenhagen Denmark. They where married for 35 years.

John had three children, Jenifer of Rochester, Scott and his wife Linda of Milford, and Stephanie Brown and her husband Steve of Converse Texas he also had 5 Grand Children.

After the Army he joined the United States Postal Service as a Rural Letter Carrier. He spent his 20 years at the Durham Post Office in Durham, N.H.

John loved to golf at least 3 times a week with his best friend Dale.

John was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign. He was an all American State Commander from 2007-2008. He also held many jobs in the VFW. He was a member of the Rochester American Legion Post #7, a life member of Chapter 23 of the Disabled American Veterans of Farmington, a member of Cooties Pup Tent #2 a group of the VFW. Finally he was a member of Human Lodge 21 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Rochester.

John loved to watch the Big Bang Theory even when he was near death her had to hear it he watched it every day.

A very special thank you goes out to Dale and Barbara Kreiensieck who called and came to visit John almost every other day when he first got sick. John enjoyed these visits. When John went down to Florida for the last time Dale called and checked up on him every other day. When John remains where brought home to Rochester Dale came over and visited with his wife Joan. Another special Thank You goes to his Sister-In-Law Janet Marcik who dropped everything and flew down to Florida when he first got sick and flew down again when John died. Janet has been a big support for Joan and his daughter Jenifer. She has helped his wife Joan with everything.

Survivors include three brothers Mikey of Manchester, Peter and his wife Debbie of Chico California and Paul and his wife Fran of Berwick Maine and four sisters Ruth-Ellen Gero and he Husband Ralph of Dover, Dorothy Calo of Dover, Kathy o'Neil and her husband of Dover and Mary Pantolakos and her Husband John of Dover. Also many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his Father Guilliomo and a Nephew Robert Marcik and many Aunts and Uncle.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Rochester VFW on 43 Highland Street in Rochester N.H. The Milton VFW Post 8393 of Milton and Rochester Post 1772 will do the VFW ritual. There maybe other Organizations who will also be involved.

John will be interred at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetary in Boscowan, New Hampshire on July 30th at 11 a.m. sharp. He will receive full Military Honors.
