PORTSMOUTH - Joseph E. Polazzi, 85, of 928 South Street, died on January 22, 2013 at the Edgewood Center.
Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on September 1, 1927, he was a son of John and Elsie (Furbish) Polazzi.
Joe served his country as a member of both the United States Army and the Navy serving during World War II
. Following his military service, he continued his service as a career firefighter
in Durham, and as a call firefighter for many years in the City of Portsmouth. He also spent time helping his dad in the family business by tending bar at the Olympia Café on Vaughn Street.
He was a talented photographer and enjoyed capturing local shots, he was also a devoted volunteer at the Edgewood Center for a number of years. He was a member of the Eliot United Methodist Church.
Joe is survived by his daughter Caroline, a sister Emily Wigley of Arlington, Texas, many nieces and nephews, his long time friend and companion Grace Dugas and her daughter Margaret whom he adored. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Eleanor O'Connor, Eloise Esty, and Elwyn and Earl Zamarchi.
Friends may visit with Joe's family on Tuesday January 30, 2013 from 10-11 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to a
