Martha Brackett Ross

BERWICK, Maine - Martha Brackett Ross, 96, of Berwick, died on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Dover.

She was born in Rutland, Mass., on May 26, 1916, the daughter of Winfred S. and Hila (Guptill) Ross. She moved with her family to Berwick at the age of 3, was educated in Berwick schools, and graduated from Berwick High School. Martha entered the nursing school program at the Salvation Army-Booth Hospital in Boston. Following graduation, she worked as a nurse at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She remained in the nursing profession until retiring in 1986 at the age of 70.

For many years, she was a member of the Berwick United Methodist Church. More recently, she was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church in Somersworth. Having never married, she counted the church and members of the congregation as family.

Martha enjoyed music, playing the piano, and watching musicals.

She was predeceased by her brother, J. Smith Ross.

Martha is survived by two cousins, Joann Schafer of Somersworth, and Judith Hayes of Sterling, Va.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First Parish Congregational Church, 176 W. High Street, Somersworth. Burial will be in the Spring in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.
