Ralph O. Langley
ELIOT, Maine - Ralph O. Langley, 89 of Bolt Hill Road in Eliot, died on Feb. 19, 2013, at Clipper Home in Portsmouth following a short illness.
Born in Kittery on Aug. 23, 1923, he was the son of Maurice E. and Marion V. (Harrigan) Langley. He was raised in South Eliot on Eliot Neck and attended local schools including Eliot High School.
Ralph proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy
and the U.S. Marine Corps
, enjoying life membership in the Eliot American Legion Post #188 and the Kittery/Eliot Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post # 9394. He also held life membership in the Naval Masonic Lodge # 184 in Kittery.
He and his loving wife of over 50 years Elizabeth " Beth" (Boston) Langley, made their home on Bolt Hill in Eliot and raised their family. Following retirement they enjoyed time with in-laws in Lady Lake, Fla., and visiting their son on Amelia Island, Fla.
In his younger years he worked as a body man at Chases Garage and then retired as a welder from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after over 20 years of service. He continued on, working for more than 20 years as a bridge gate tender and lift operator for both the Maine and New Hampshire Bridge Authority, working for the most time on the former Memorial Bridge and for a time on the Sara Mildred Long Bridge.
He will be missed by his many friends and family whom he faithfully drove to do weekly errands, visited often and shared many good memories with. He is survived by his family, a daughter Tracy Hoyt and her husband Michael of Eliot, their children Heidi and her husband Thomas Chagnon of Greenland, and Adam and Andrew Hoyt both of Eliot; two great grandchildren whom he adored, Elizabeth and Zachary Chagnon of Greenland; two nieces and many friends. He was predeceased by his wife Beth, their son Dennis Langley and a sister Cecilia Morse.
A graveside service with military honors will take place in the spring in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. Care for the Langley family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
