Major Richard (Dick) Alan Durkee
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Major Richard (Dick) Alan Durkee, USAF retired, 81, of South Berwick, Maine passed away on April 20, 2013 peacefully in his sleep.
Richard was born on April 15, 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Philander and Paula Durkee. He graduated from Monroe High School in St. Paul and began studies at the University of Minnesota
before joining the USAF flight school class of 1951.
Richard served in the USAF for 20 years beginning in the Strategic Air Command flying B36 and B47 bombers. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War
where he was involved in reconnaissance and search and rescue operations during 1966 and 1967. After returning from Vietnam, he became an instructor pilot for the Air Force. Teaching flying was a passion which he maintained for the rest of his life. He loved flying all types of airplanes from ultralights to Lear jets.
Richard was a very private person; but always enjoyed active time with his family playing sports, boating, sailing, riding motorcycles or swimming in the family pool. Throughout his life Richard loved his dogs and his dogs loved him.
He is survived by his wife Maxine Durkee, his children, Richard Durkee Jr. and his wife Suzanne, David Durkee and his wife Gabriele, Cheryl and her husband Scott Walsh, John Forster and his wife Jennifer, Kristjan Durkee and Eric Durkee, his grandsons Nathan and wife Nicolle, Ruven, Nelsen, John III, and Jordan, his nieces and nephew in Minnesota, Barbara, Janet, Paul and their families. Also his most loved Springer Spaniel Nicky.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Philander Austin Durkee and Paula Mildred Lee, his beloved sister Phyllis and his loving brother Phil. He was also preceded in death by his beloved rescue German [#]Shephard, Luna and numerous Great Danes and Springer Spaniels.
The family will hold a private service at his home in South Berwick on May 4th where he will be honored with a 21 gun salute, flag folding ceremony and the playing of taps. He will be missed by so many.
