Richard Allen Starkey
KITTERY, Maine - Richard Allen Starkey, 82, of Martin Road in Kittery died on November 13, 2013 at his home.
He was born on May 13,1931 in York Maine a son of Ralph P. and Louise (Clark) Starkey. He attended York and Kittery schools graduating from Robert W Traip Academy with the class of 1948 and married his high school sweetheart, Emily Jean (Wiggin) Starkey. Dick entered the United States Army
at Fort Dix, N.J. and served in the Korean conflict
. Following his service to his country he attended evening classes at Northeastern
University in Boston, Mass. He got his start in the motorcycle business at Western Auto in Portsmouth selling Hondas. He along with Bill Howell opened Kittery Cycle in 1967 on route 236. After several years he bought the business and in 1972 moved it to the Kittery Traffic Circle where " Kittery Cycle" became a well known family business for many years.
Dick and his wife Emily were members of the Maine Obsolete Auto League and enjoyed attending many events over the years with his mom and dad and their Model T Ford. Dick and his wife enjoyed over 50 summers with family and friends at their camp on Pine River Pond in East Wakefield, as well as their winters in Punta Gorda, Florida. Together they traveled across country in their motorhome twice visiting all states but North Dakota. They also enjoyed traveling abroad even meeting Mr. Honda himself in Japan.
He is survived by his loving family a daughter Beth E. Pruett of Eliot, a son Richard " Rick" Starkey and his wife Pamela of Kittery, grandchildren Benjamin Paul and his wife Nicole of Rochester, Joshua Starkey and his wife Kathleen of Kittery, Mitchell Pruett and his wife Kelly of Lebanon, Maine, and Adam Starkey of Dover, great grandchildren; Hailey and Gage Paul, and Mackenzie Jean Pruett, and a sister Eleanor and her husband Frank Collins of Portsmouth, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years Emily and a brother Donald E. Starkey.
A funeral will be celebrated on Monday November 18, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, with the Rev Brad Hirst officiating. Friends may visit with Dick's family on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Family flowers only, donations may be made in his memory to Footprints Food Pantry PO Box 246 Kittery, Maine 03904 or to the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum 200 Rogers Road Extension Kittery, Maine 03904.
