Robert C. Sprague, Sr.
SANFORD - Robert C. Sprague, Sr., 79, just shy of his 80th birthday, passed from this life on Jan. 4, 2013, and joined his dear wife Ruby in Heaven. They were reunited on the very same day that Ruby had died, three years earlier.
Robert was born in Parsonsfield on Jan. 6, 1933, one of five children born to Robert H. and Bernice M. (Meloon) Sprague.
In his early years, Bob knew the importance of hard work and learned from the adults in his life different skills that would serve him well as he entered the work force. He started working with his father building many homes throughout the area. You knew if you bought a home by the pair - it was built right. He then became employed with George Adams, of Sanford, and Bowley Brothers, of Kennebunk. Bob could tell by just looking at the wood if he could turn it into something beautiful, whether a piece of furniture or a detailed piece using his scroll saw.
Robert met his sweetheart and future wife, Ruby Babcock, one night while the two were out with friends at a local bowling alley. They shared 55 years together and raised two sons, Robert, Jr., and Brian. As a family, they loved going to their camp on Clemens Pond in Hiram. The fishing pole was never left in the corner for too long! Many of Bob's and Ruby's friends were just like themselves; they worked hard all week and their camp became their weekend hideaway. Lifelong friendships were made and through the years, they shared joys and challenges with one another.
Bob was a John Wayne fan and westerns were his favorite movies.
He and Ruby often went out dancing and classic country music would always be playing on the "hi-fi" (stereo) in the living room.
He planted a large vegetable garden each year and enjoyed going out to breakfast with his friend, Bill Thyng. They had worked together for years.
Bob was also a fellow Mason of the Alfred Masonic Lodge 55 AF & AM.
You would never see Bob without his little Pug, named "Pugsy," by his side.
Bob is survived by his two sons, Robert Sprague, Jr., and wife, Joanne, of Sanford, and Brian Sprague and wife, Pamela, of Kennebunk; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Louise M. Bouchard, Lois E. Hayford and Ralph H. Sprague, all from Sanford.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby, and sister, Muriel Trafton.
A graveside service will be held later in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred.
