Samuel Mathews

BERWICK, Maine - Samuel S. "Sam" Mathews, 82, of Cranberry Meadow Road, died Friday, November 23, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Berwick on June 1, 1930, a son of Frank and Merle (Nason) Mathews, and was educated in Berwick schools.

Sam proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

On May 19, 1955, he married Harriet Guy. Together they shared nearly 53 years, until her death in 2008.

Sam worked for 17 years at Prime Tanning. From 1963 until the present, he owned and operated Sam Mathews Rubbish Removal and his construction business. He spent many years on the Berwick Board of Selectmen, and was Trustee and Superintendent of the Berwick Cemetery Association. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post #79 in Berwick.

Survivors include his two daughters, Lillie and Tammy; two sons, Samuel and Brian and wife Meagan; two brothers, Harry Mathews and wife Sally, Thomas Mathews and wife Pat; six sisters, Eleanor Murphy, Frances Therrien and husband Rene, Joan Hashem, Marjorie Gagnon, Carolyn Lazzaro and husband, Tony, Leslie Ouimette and husband Bob; two granddaughters, Hailey and Ella Mathews; grandson, Justin Hokinson, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his pets who will miss him dearly.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m., with an American Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, Maine where a Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
