KITTERY, Maine - Virginia C. (Morrow) Higgins, 92, died Sat., Jan. 5, 2013, at Portsmouth Hospital. She was the last surviving child of Thomas and Minnie (Ham) Morrow, and the 10th of 12 children. Virginia was born and lived her life in Kittery until recently. She graduated from Traip Academy in 1937. For 66 years she was married to Sherman Higgins and together with Bud & Avis Tarling, they built and operated the Northeaster Motel from 1950 to 1965.

Virginia had a natural talent for playing the piano. For many years she provided the accompaniment for the Kittery Firemens/Lions variety shows. In retirement she played at local nursing homes for their sing-alongs.

Despite her busy life, she always made time for her children's activities. She delighted in the biannual family gatherings with her siblings and their families. In retirement she and Sherm wintered in Florida and summered at Square Pond, Maine.

She is survived by two children: Lindley Higgins and his wife Penny of Kittery and her daughter, Sherilyn Higgins of Portsmouth. She is predeceased by her husband and brothers N. Lindley, Thomas, Cedric, Raymond "Johnny," Norman "Bud" and sisters Marion McCabe, Geraldine Wurm, Minnie Philbrook, and Muriel, Methyl and Norma "Sis" Morrow.

Friends may visit with Virginia's family on Saturday Jan. 12, 2013, from 11 a.m.-noon in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904, where a memorial service will follow at noon in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Mark H. Wentworth Home. Care for the Higgins family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
