Randall Cushing Obituary

GREENLAND — Randall Cushing, husband of Ann Marie (Mooney) Cushing of 17 Cortland Drive, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, N.H., following a long illness. He was 58.

Born June 5, 1951, he was the son of Nina Cushing (formerly of Rye, N.H., and now of Portsmouth, N.H.) and the late Allan Cushing.

A 1969 graduate of Portsmouth High School, he attended the University of New Hampshire before starting his own roofing company, R.C. Roofing, Inc. Over a span of three decades his business became a fixture in the Seacoast Region.

An enthusiast of sports and photography and an authority on the music of the last half century, he had collected thousands of record albums at one time before his wide-ranging curiosity turned to literature and history. There were few local purveyors of rare books whom he didn't get to know as he explored their shelves for an interesting find.

Devoted to his family, and skilled in the ways of hard work and self-reliance, he was the one whom others always turned to for a helping hand. He gave graciously, always dispensing his own gentle humor to lighten an arduous chore.

Besides his wife and mother, his family includes daughter, Sarah Scott, of Rye, her husband, Jeff, and their two sons, Alexander and Evan; daughter, Kimberly Cushing of Waltham, Mass., and her boyfriend, Varflay Kesselly; brother, George Cushing and his wife, Donna, of Milton, and their daughters, Kelly, Courtney and Alana, and her son, Ryder.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 9 at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family followed by a burial service at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish are invited to donate to the Hyder Family Hospice House, 285 County Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820.

I just today learned of the sad news. Randy and I went all the way through school in Rye, I believe from first grade on, and even as a little boy he was salt of the earth - and always funny in his quiet way. He will be missed!

Dear Ann,
I am so saddened by the passing of Randy. We were all so close in High
School and share so many wonderful memories. We were best friends.
I remember how we used to listen to all our great record alblums, and all the lawns we cut in Portsmouth!
Please drop me an e-mail sometime.
God bless you and your family.

Ann and family,
I wanted to express my condolences and to let you all know what a privilege it was to get to know Randy during his stay at HFHH. It was clear to all of us from the beginning that Randy was not 'just another' patient. The highlight of our days was seeing his face and to get a smile from Randy was a source of great joy. I only wish we all could have met sooner, under different circumstances. You were a blessed family to have had him and I mourn your loss with you.
Sincerely,
Michelle (aka-the blonde in the kitchen)

I was so saddened to hear of Randy's death and wanted to let you know that along with everyone else in the class of '69 Randy (and you too Ann) was loved for his kind and gentle manner. Randy was an exceptional example to everyone and I will always remember him smiling and having fun.
May all your wonderful memories of your days together comfort you in the months ahead.
Fondly,

To the Cushing Family - Bonnie and I are deeply sorrowed by your loss. We admire the strength and support that both Anne and George have demonstrated during Randy's lengthy illness. And Randy couldn't have had a more supportive brother than George.

But, oh, the good times: Randy sharing his quiet ways and good humor whether on the basketball court, on a Road Trip to Boston to see the Celts or the Sox or in brother George's backyard for a family cookout and "tossing some 'shoes". These and many other treasured memories will remain. Go in Peace, Randy. Don Dunton

Hello,
I do not know if you remember me. I worked at the Edgewood Centre for awhile and knew you all because of your husband, father, grandfather, Allan. I did not know Randall well, but I did meet him on a number of occasions.
This has to be a terrible loss to each one of you. Know that I care.
I have always found these words comforting and inspiring:
"I believe that tears are instruments of healing;
That memories are a bridge between the here and the hereafter;
And that love never ends."
Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our hearts go out to the Cushing family
Having known Randy since the late 60's, when he hung out with my brother, and fondly remember my Mom knicknaming him Bozo, Then in the later years seeing him at many local bookstores always searching and most times finding that elusive book.
Randy had a quality that you seldom find, and a heart of gold. Always had that devilish grin, and witty sense of humor.
We will miss Randy but will never forget him, Rest in peace our friend
