Hans Heilbronner Obituary

DURHAM — Hans Heilbronner died on June 8, 2011.

He was born on Jan. 31, 1926, in Memmingen, Germany, to Alfred and Helen (Liebschuetz) Heilbronner. From 1932 to 1939, he experienced the persecution visited upon Jews by the Germans. In March 1939, he and his brother were able to flee to Switzerland. Upon his father's release from the Dachau concentration camp, the family gained temporary admission to England, where it arrived on Aug. 31, one day before the outbreak of World War II.

In the spring of 1940, the family was able to emigrate to the United States. After one year of middle school he entered Central High School in Detroit, Mich., from which he graduated as class president in January 1944. He always felt that the teachers and fellow students at Central High School had been, aside from his family, the most positive formative influences of his life. His school experiences transformed him from a penniless emigrant who did not know English into a respected member of society. They remained the basis of his passionate attachment to the idea of public education as the greatest force for good in American life.

After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1944. To be admitted to Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., the Army prevailed upon a federal judge to grant him early U.S. citizenship, which led to his graduation as a second lieutenant at age 18 that same year. He served, ultimately as a first lieutenant, until August 1946.

After the war, he entered the University of Michigan under the G.I. Bill, graduated in Jan. 1949 with a B.A. in History, and membership in Phi Beta Kappa, followed in Jan. 1950 with an master of arts. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. After that conflict he returned to the University of Michigan, and concluded the work for a doctorate in Russian History.

He married Phyllis Willar of Worcester in 1954 and that same year joined the history faculty of the University of New Hampshire, from which he retired as professor in 1991 after 37 years of service. He published numerous articles in Russian history and was honored by three distinguished teaching awards and was chosen twice as chairman of the Faculty Council. He was the recipient of two Fulbright Awards, one each to France and Greece, and a Social Science Fellowship to Austria.

He was elected to the Durham Town Council and served as its chair for one term. He also was a longtime member of the Durham Zoning Board of Adjustment. He was a congregant of Temple Israel, Portsmouth, N.H., and was an officer and member of the board of directors for many years.

His wife, Phyllis, survives him; as well as his son, Warren, and daughter-in-law, Joan, and their two children, Dana and Alison of Weston, Mass, and his son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Sarah, and their two children, Rachel and Adam of Boulder, Colo.; nieces and nephews, Judith Avrin, David and Lynn Heilbronner, and cousins in the country, Israel and Europe.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 12, at Temple Israel, 200 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. Memories and Condolences
for Hans Heilbronner

Not sure what to say?

June 30, 2011

Professor Heilbronner was my most inspiring and generous teacher at UNH. He and Phyllis also hired me for odd jobs in their yard, I'm sure knowing that the wages helped me pay my university bills. His intensity and command of subject in the classroom and his personal warmth have guided me for years in my own teaching at the University of Connecticut. I will always contribute to UNH's Endowed Fund for Halocaust Studies to honor this exceptional person.

Hans was a part of my life, from our time together at UNH to the walks he and Phyllis took around town. I am grateful for knowing him and will miss his presence in our community.

Heinz will be missed by the Durham community not only for his service to the University and to the town but also for his cheerfulness, good humor, and down-to-earth attitude. Just to see him walk up Mill Road with his sticks, chasing Phyllis, brought a smile to many faces. My condolences to the family.

Hans was one of the most respected of my UNH colleagues. He and I shared great interest in Russian history, although I certainly couldn't match his expertise.
UNH has lost one of its most distinguished emeritii.

One of the great gifts in our lives has been being neighbors to Hans and Phyllis. Hans will be missed dearly. He was admired and enjoyed by our family. I always looked forward to seeing him on his daily walks and catching a few words with him during the day. I treasure the dinners and discussions, whether we discussed the tour of France or UNH politics, he was sharp witted and always had an opinion. He brought us great joy and inspiration. We feel a great loss.

My condolences to the Heilbronner family. Professor Heilbronner's World History class was instrumental in my decision to change my major to history. His classes were always intellectually challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. Some of my fondest memories of UNH involve having been in his presence.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Professor Heilbronner. I took several classes with him in the mid 1970's and found them to be the most interesting and informative. I always sensed that besides knowing history, he lived it.

June 10, 2011

Professor Heilbronner taught my world history class in 1964-5 and managed to make the subject come alive, even for a math major. Later, he and his family moved into a house across the street from my parents. His kindness to them in their later years was very much appreciated. I was so sorry to hear of his passing.

My condolenses to the Heilbronner family. Professor Heilbronner was one of my favorite instructors in the history department where I attended after my Vietnam era service and sparked my interest in Russian history that continues to this day. I have travelled to Russia many times since then and I occassionally think back to my classes with the Professor as the start of my interest and search for my heritage.

My sister informed me of Prof. Heilbronner's death this morning. I had asked Paul Brockelman about him when I bumped into him last January. Prof. Heilbronner changed me. He provided a model for me and I began to imagine myself an intellectual, a researcher, a scholar. He was so supportive and we kept in touch for many years. He was pleased that I became an anthropologist and deservedly proud of the role he played in shaping my imagination. He was the best college professor I ever had, by far. I will always remember the passion in his voice in his lectures. I fell in love with European history and I began to formulate new questions that I have pursued throughout my life. Thank you, Hans. You lived a beautiful, fulfilling life and touched so many of us and got us to begin engaging with the world.
