SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. - Philip A. Chase, 89, husband of the late Ardys W. Chase of South Windsor, Conn. departed this life on November 29, 2013. He was born in Rochester, New Hampshire July 18, 1924, son of the late George and Marion Chase. He attended the Rochester school system, graduating from Spaulding High School in 1942. He entered the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 1942 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1942. He entered on active service March 5, 1943 and served over three and a half years in the service including one and a half years in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged from the service in June 1946 and had obtained the rank of first lieutenant (INF). He married his high school sweetheart Ardys L. Winkley on August 24, 1946 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on August 24, 2007. He reentered the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 1946 and graduated in June 1950 with a B.S. Degree (cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering. He accepted employment as an Experimental Test Engineer at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Corporation in East Hartford, Conn. where he worked for over thirty years retiring as a Senior Project Engineer in 1980. His work involved the development of gas turbine aircraft jet engines. He then accepted employment as a Technical Consultant and Mediator with Howmet Corporation stationed in East Hartford, Conn. He worked between all of PWA engine development groups and all of Howmets casting divisions throughout the United States. He was a very active musician playing the trumpet in the Spaulding High School band and orchestra and participated for four years in the New Hampshire State Music Festival. He also played in the University of New Hampshire marching band and symphonic orchestra as well as the Rochester New Hampshire city band and the Windsor, Conn. town band. He was a past member of the Motolinia I.O.O.F. #18 of Rochester, a past master of Rochester Grange #86 and a member of the Romana, State and National Grange. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 0133 in South Windsor, Conn., and the Loyal Order of Moose, Rockville Lodge 1574 Rockville, Conn. He was also a member of the Ellington Congregational Church.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years Ardys W. Chase, a baby brother Louis William Chase, a sister and her husband Gladys and Deane Percy of Dover, a sister and her husband Mildred and Kenneth Maloon of Red Bank, New Jersey, and a brother and his wife Carroll and Elinor Mathews of Middlebury, Conn. He is survived by a daughter Phyllis C. Maslak and her husband Stuart of Ellington, Conn., a son William T. Chase and his wife Heidi of Vernon, Conn., a grandson Alexander C. Maslak, of Ellington, Conn., a step grandson Jason M. Bartlett and his wife Melissa and their daughters Jeslyn Marie Bartlett and Zoey Jae Bartlett of Vernon, Conn. Besides his family he leaves several close dear friends, namely; Larry Cobb of Zephyrhills, Fla., Elaine Viot of Manchester, Conn., Phyllis Aldrich of Manchester, Conn., Robert and Lucy Ignani of South Windsor, Conn., and Tammy Mathews of South Berwick, Maine. He and his family enjoyed spending their summers at their cottages in York Beach, Maine. He loved all forms of sports and actively participated in duckpin and tenpin bowling and golf for many years.

The family would like to thank the staff at Crestfield Rehabilitation Center and Fenwood Manor of Manchester, Conn. for the wonderful care and support they provided.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, December 5, 2013, from 4-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2013, 11 a.m., at the funeral home. His family will also receive friends on Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 10-12 Noon at the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester; followed by a graveside service at the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick, Maine, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that contributions be made to the Charles T.
