PORTSMOUTH — Alexander Athans of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away Nov. 25, 2009 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in New York City, April 1, 1931, the son of the late Peter and Theodora (Sakkas) Athans. After moving to N.H., Alex graduated from Dover High School, Class of 1949. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1950-1953. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in 1987, followed by his retirement from Hovey's Camera Shop in Portsmouth.
Alex was a Communicant of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth.
He was predeceased by two brothers, George Athans, U.S. Naval Reserve, and John Athans of Rollinsford.
Alex is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katina (Savramis) Athans of Portsmouth; one daughter, Doreen Athans of Portsmouth; one son, George Athans and his wife, Deena, of Lee; one grandson, Christopher Athans of Lee; one brother-in-law, George C. Savramis and his wife, Daphne, of Portsmouth; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Savramis) Pantelas and her husband, Panos, of Saco, Maine; and Anne (Kargas) Athans of Rollinsford; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with wake services by Fr. Angelo Pappas at 6 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Andrew Jarvis Drive, Portsmouth. Family flowers only.
