SOMERSWORTH — Allan Francis Carney, 67, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, at his residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.

Allan was born on April 13, 1945 in Providence, R.I. and was the son of the late Roderick Carney and Florence Provost Carney.
Allan was a retired Master Sargent from the U.S. Air Force serving from 1963 to 1983 and held various posts worldwide. He was a Vietnam Veteran and a member of the South Berwick VFW. As an avid sailor, he belonged to several local yacht clubs including, Pepperell Cove and Portsmouth Navy Yacht Clubs. Allan had received two masters degrees that he was very proud of, a Masters of Science from Troy State University, and a Master of Arts from St. Mary's University. He was later employed as Director of Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs for both Hampstead and Seaborne Hospitals.
In addition to his love for sailing, Allan also enjoyed Broadway, and in past years was active in the Seacoast Repertory Theatre. In recent years, he and his wife Donna traveled extensively throughout the United States in their RV, covering all 50 states.
Survivors include his wife, of 48 years, Donna Boyer- Carney of Somersworth; his daughter, Jeannine Carney and Blaine J. Patrick of Derry; and two brothers, Roderick Carney of Lenoir, N.C. and James T. Carney of Fall River, Mass.
Allan was predeceased by two brothers, Leon and Norman Carney.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave. Dover. Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday September 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Michael Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the N.H. Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
