Andrew Leichtnam Obituary

Andrew J. Leichtnam

MILTON - Andrew J. Leichtnam, 78, passed away on Sept. 13, 2013 after a courageous fight with mesothelioma. He was born in New Jersey on Oct. 14, 1934 to Florence and Andrew Leichtnam.

He grew up in Hackensack, N.J. In 1954, he joined the US Marine Corp where he met his wife Tommie. After he left the Maine Corp he worked at Davidson Rubber. Then went to work at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1959, where he retired as a General Foreman from Shop 56 in 1989.

He liked fishing, hunting, and driving his "Little Blue Truck". He took great pride in his truck, he worked on it endlessly. He played cribbage anytime he could, and loved to tinker with just about anything. He was always there day or night to lend a helping hand for anyone that needed it. He took great care of his wife, Tommie and son Andy-Joe. He was an amazing Dad and Grampy.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Andrew's name to Great Bay Services, 2061 Woodbury Ave, Newington, NH 03801 and Hyder Family Hospice House, 285 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820

This is to my grandpa, I was so lucky to have such a great grandpa who always cared so much. He also loved teaching me new things about the farm and riding on the tractor while he was haying the fields, finding the calf's that had just been born, feeding the cows (mine kissiefer) which I didn't realize he had her butchered and I had some lol. I will miss him saying hey kiddo and one of his favs Jesus Christ "especially during cribbage". The early morning fishing trips from the farm to a lake down the road grandpa wouldn't cut my hair when it got caught in the reel while bringing a fish in I was so upset I wanted the fishso bad. so many good times to name. My son Zachary loved him very much and learned a lot also. Grandpa always told me kiddo you r doing a great job with that handsome kid. He is the best grandpa, great grandpa, father, husband and friend. I LOVE YOU GRANDPA!!!

He was part of you childhood when the world was so different. He looked like you and maybe even talked like you and walked like you. No one can replace him. He was good people. Andy was my general Forman when I worked in chemical cleaning. I learned a lot from him as a 4th year apprentice I was his only radiation worker at the time and he used to call me 'hey you' and he would brief me on how he wanted a hand hole connection piped using his hands in the open air. He said "run it like this then over here, then over here" he was quite a character. I remember our 6 month TDY to Hawaii to clean the boilers on SSN Puffer, he stayed at Makaha with his family and I stayed in Waikiki as I could not blend into the locals. That was the best trip and I still have the group photo at the worksite on Pearl Harbor. It was fun joking with the stewardess in the back of the plane talking about Andy and then finding he was standing behind me. He just gave me that look and said "hey Cookie how is everything". I will always remember Andy and the work we did as a 23 year old pipefitter he really made a lasting impression. Rest in peace brother.
