Bernard (Mac) Joseph McGovern

ROCHESTER - Bernard (Mac) Joseph McGovern, 82, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at his home after a period of failing health, surrounded by his family.

Mac was born in Cambridge, Mass. on March 4, 1931, the son of Bernard and Margaret (Shallow) McGovern and had been living in Rochester since 1989, moving from Winthrop, Mass. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Rochester and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mac is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary McGovern of Rochester, their children, Debra Sbrizza and her husband Louis, Jr. of Rochester, Maryellen Christopher of Rochester, Donna Secondini and her husband Roberto of Stoneham, Mass., Michael McGovern and his wife Margo of Winthrop, Mass., Timothy McGovern and his wife Karen of Winthrop, Mass., Charlene Moriarty and her husband William III of Sanbornville, and his son Bernard J. McGovern of Cambridge, Mass. He was predeceased by his loving daughter-in-law, Laureen McGovern. He is known as Papa Mac to his sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother John McGovern of Somerville, Mass. and his two sisters-in-law Cecilia Costello of East Boston, and Beryl Costello of Brockton, Mass., three brothers-in-law, John Costello of Billerica, Mass., James L. Costello of East Boston, Mass., and Walter Zukowski of Somerville, Mass., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held at the H. J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main Street, Rochester, N.H. on Thursday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated following visitation at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 189 North Main Street, Rochester, N.H., followed by burial in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery.

The family requests that there be no flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Cornerstone VNA and Hospice, 178 Farmington Road, Rochester, N.H. 03867.
