ROCHESTER - Dana B. Mitchell, 77, of Rochester, died Monday, December 10, 2012 at his home.
A dedicated husband and father, he was known by all for his quick wit and love of life. He spent hours putting others at ease with jokes and off the cuff remarks. Those who knew him, came to love him for this hallmark trait.
An avid sports fan, nothing gave him more joy than watching the Patriots on Sunday with his brother and daughter or watching the Red Sox whenever they happened to be on. He truly adored the simple pleasures in life, including his daily commitment to Judge Judy at 4 p.m. every day.
He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on December 2, 1935, the son of Edwin F. and Dorothy I. (Irish) Mitchell.
Dana was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1953 and went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Nasson College.
He served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1961. Dana formerly owned and operated Murrey Mitchell's Sporting Goods of Salem, New Hampshire and before his retirement worked at Regal Limousine for ten years. He had also worked at Montgomery Ward's formerly of Newington, New Hampshire.
He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #97 of Portsmouth.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Gail (LeFevre) Mitchell; daughter, Dina Marie Mitchell of Portsmouth; brother, Edwin F. Mitchell of Rochester; sister, Nancy E. Mitchell of Randolph, Mass.; several brother and sister in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Services: Visiting hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Elk services at 12:45 p.m. by B.P.O.E. # 97 followed by a short service from 1 to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 15 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. Graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cocheco Valley Humane Society, 262 County Farm Road, Dover, N.H. 03820.
