SOMERSWORTH — Edward M. Harrity, 88, passed away at Maine Medical Center Tuesday, April 10, 2012, after a long illness.

The son of Martin and Yvonne (Therrien) Harrity. Born and raised in Somersworth, attending Somersworth High and later served in the Navy during World War II. Employed for years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Upon retiring he traveled the world with his longtime friend and companion Barbara Herbert of East Hampstead. A member of the Masons #96, Moses Paul Lodge, the Dover Elk Lodge 184, and the American Legion of Rollinsford post 47.

Ed enjoyed golfing, dancing, baseball, and never could resist singing to the tunes of Frank Sinatra and other greats. He was always the happiest being on or around the ocean.

He was predeceased by two sons, Dennis and Edward "Teddy" Harrity.

He is survived by a son, Michael Harrity of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Harrity and her partner Judy Graham of Gorham, Jane Harrity of Villanova, Penn., and Megan Harrity of Fort Collins, Colo. Also his sister, Mary Walsh of Derry; two nieces, Maureen Nassar and Susan Graveline and six grandchildren.

Edward's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Gorham House and Maine Medical Center (especially to Gail on the first floor), for their care and compassion.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Somersworth.
