DURHAM — Edward F. Whitney (Ned) died on May 6, 2012, in Portsmouth at the age of 96.

Born on Aug. 12, 1915, in Locust, N.J., he graduated with honors in 1938 from Harvard University where he was captain of the rugby team. A resident of Dublin, N.H. for over 60 years, he served as selectman for many years and was active in the life of the town. He spent the last few years of his life at The Inn at SpruceWood in Durham.

He was predeceased by his much-loved wife, Millicent Bonner Bowring Whitney on Dec. 25, 1987, and is survived by his children, Cynthia Farley of Lee, N.H., Edward Bonner of New York City, Amy Susan of Lambertville, N.J., Richard Duane of Lee, N.H., and James Warren of Bowdoinham, Maine; by ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

A gentle, kind and generous man, he will be much missed.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on May 13, 2012 at the Dublin Community Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Dublin School.
