ELIOT — Gladys Edna Horning, 86, of Kinsley Lane in Eliot, died on May 12, 2012, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Eliot on March 19, 1926, she was a daughter of Andrew Jacob and Hazel Dell (Staples) Horning. She was raised in Eliot attending local schools graduating from Eliot High School with the class of 1943. Gladys worked for over 29 years and retired as head bookkeeper at First National Bank of Portsmouth.
She was a cornerstone of her church, the Eliot United Methodist Church, serving on many committees and an ever present friendly face to all who visited, capturing all her activities on film to share with others. She and her sister Mildred Horning made their home together on Beech Road for over 46 years, before making their home on Kinsley Lane, they shared their many activities together, Gladys being the best navigator anyone could hope for during their many car trips together. She enjoyed driving to North Carolina to visit with family; she also enjoyed many bus trips with the Eliot Senior Citizens.
One of 16 children, Gladys is survived by her loving sister, Mildred Horning of Eliot; many cousins throughout New England, New York and the Carolinas; as well as her loving church and neighborhood families.
A funeral will be celebrated on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 10 a.m. in her church the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. Friends may visit with Gladys' family at the church on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
