EXETER - Irving Howard Grout, 84, died November 20, 2012 at the Oceanside Rehabilitation Center in Hampton, after a period of failing health.

He was born September 20, 1928 in Bennington, Vt., son of the late Roy and Marilla (Howard) Grout.

Irving grew up in Arlington, Vt. and was a graduate of Arlington High School. He was also a graduate of the University of Vermont in 1951 receiving degrees in Industrial Education and Physical Science. While at the university, he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Following graduation, he served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War, and he was assigned to the Marine Corp. Institute in Washington, D.C. He completed graduate work at the University of Maryland. His career in education and sales, took him to Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey, where he lived in Martinsville, N.J. for 16 years.

Irving served as a Scout Master for the Boy Scout Troop #46 in Martinsville for many years. He served on the board of directors of the Washington Valley Library in Martinsville. He served as a deacon of the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church. In 1978, he moved to Exeter, where he worked as a manufacturing agent for Hunter Engineering. He served on the Diaconate of The Congregational Church in Exeter, UCC. Irving was a past Commodore of the Portsmouth Yacht Club.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Irving's hobbies included boating, tennis, skiing, and he was a master woodworker.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean (Wallace) Grout of Exeter; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Cindy Grout of Ft. Myers, Fla., son, Richard Grout of Absecon, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Peter Adamowicz of Simsbury, Conn.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Freeman and Jean Grout of Randolph, Vt.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 1 p.m. at The Congregational Church in Exeter, UCC, 21 Front St., Exeter.

Interment will be in The Congregational Church in Exeter, UCC Memorial Garden.
