YORK, Maine - James Joseph Fitzpatrick, 80, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013, peacefully at York Hospital with family at his side, following a brief illness.
He was born in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 8, 1932. Jim graduated from high school at the Bulkeley School in New London, Conn. and received both his Bachelor of Science and Law degree from Boston University.
Devoted to his wife, family, church and country, Jim served in the U.S. Army in Fort Dix, N.J., and Korea in 1955 and held various leadership positions at the First Parish Church of York, Maine. He was active in the community, serving the Boy Scout Troop 301, Babe Ruth Baseball, Masonic Lodge Excellent High Priest while in Melrose, Mass., and was Past Commander and Chaplain of York's American Legion Post 56.
Jim practiced law in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts with a commitment to his clients. His career included arguing a case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1965.
He enjoyed following baseball, was a voracious reader of history and biographies, and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. In his spare time he loved cruising the coast of York in his boat with his grandchildren and dining with good friends in area restaurants.
Jim is survived by his wife Evelyn, whom he married Oct. 29, 1955 and enjoyed 57 wonderful years of marriage; three children, James Alexander and his wife Lisa of Chesterton, Ind., Joyce Kathryn of North Attleboro, Mass., and Jeffrey Scott and his wife Carol of Georgetown, Mass.; four grandchildren, Alexandra, Conor, Abigail, and Samuel; nephew, Bobby Kasputes and nieces Jean Bachovchin, Linda Dossett, and Chrissy Powell.
Calling hours for Jim will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, in the First Parish Church, 180 York St., York, Maine.
