Ralph K. Small

DOVER - Ralph K. Small, 71, of Martha's Way, died March 26, 2013, at Hyder Family Hospice House, Dover, after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 31, 1941, in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of Kenneth G. and Irene (Fournier) Small. He was raised in Augusta, Maine, where he graduated from Cony High School. After completing high school he served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He spent many summers in New Harbor, Maine.

Ralph began working in banking in Augusta, Maine. He was then an assistant manager of Cottles Market in Waterville, Maine, before retiring from Shaw's Supermarkets after 30 years of service. He resided in Newmarket and Dover for 30 years.

He loved his family, the ocean, lighthouses, and lobster. He was a member of several lighthouse societies, including the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. Ralph enjoyed volunteering at Nubble Lighthouse & Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the New England coasts.

Ralph enjoyed his daily visits to socialize at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital cafeteria. He was a wonderful photographer and loved to take photos of his travels and family.

He was a member of American Legion Post 8 in Dover, and the Lions Club.

Survivors include two loving daughters, Pamela (Small) Caswell and her husband Martin of Newmarket, Amy Small of Newmarket; one granddaughter, whom he adored and admired, Emily Small of Newmarket; a sister, Nancy Adkins and her husband Edward of Windsor, Maine; a brother, William Small and his wife Linda of Westwood, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, his former spouse Judy Marble of Stratham, and her family.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 3, from 5-8 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.
