Robert A. Cheney

NORTH HAMPTON - Robert A. Cheney, Brigadier General, U.S. Army (Retired), 86, of North Hampton, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Edgewood Centre of Portsmouth.

He was born January 6, 1927 in Farmington, the son of the late Arnold and Bernice (Towle) Cheney.

Mr. Cheney attended the University of New Hampshire and then served one year in the Army before being appointed to The United States Military Academy at U.S. Military Academy. He graduated with the Class of 1950 and was immediately sent to the Korean War for a 22 month tour. Mr. Cheney later received his MBA from Harvard University in 1957.

Mr. Cheney served in the United States Army during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. In Vietnam, he served as a battalion commander of the 44th Signal Battalion and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service. His final assignment was Deputy Commanding General of the Army's Electronics Command in Fort Monmouth, NJ, where in 1977, he retired after 27 years of service. After retiring, he served as Director of Product Support for Sanders Associates for ten years. During his career he was a pioneer in the development of Computer-Aided Logistic Support (CALS), which was accepted for use by more than a dozen defense departments around the world.

Mr. Cheney was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion, a member of the Society of Logistics Engineers, AFCEA, and an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan.

Mr. Cheney was the husband of the late Eugenia H. (Moran) Cheney who predeceased him in 2010. They were married 60 years.

Family members include his sons, Robert Cheney, Jr. and his wife Angela of Farmington, Richard Cheney and his wife Yolanda of Lee, Owen Cheney II and his wife Lynne of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, Christopher Cheney, George Cheney, Alexander Cheney, Meiliege Black, Alyssa Cheney, Charles Cheney, Andrew Cheney, Margaret Cheney, Timothy Cheney; great grandson Julian Cheney Black and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his son Charles Cheney.

Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2013 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Rd., Hampton. Services will follow the visitation, starting at 12 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be at 12 p.m., Monday, June 10, 2013 in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.
