Sally A. Huston

RYE - Sally A. Huston, 95, of Rye, died May 22, 2013 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born May 8, 1918, in Bethel, Maine to Harry H. King and Sarah (George) King. Sally graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel in 1936.

She married Roland E. Huston of Freedom, August 16, 1942 in Portsmouth. Sally worked at her aunt's tea room in West Ossipee, and then in her early twenties she worked in a family restaurant in Gorham. She and a friend attended local weekend barn dances and where she met Roland. In her words, "He stole my heart, was happy go lucky, fun to be with, handsome, and we had great times together". They were married for more than 70 years.

She called their greatest years, those that followed Roland's return from military service in World War II. Their family grew, they bought their home in Rye and many happy years followed while raising their three children. Fun times included spending summer weekends at cottage on the lake, square dancing and playing on a bowling league.

Sally was a member of Rye Congregational Church and was involved with the Church Women's Circle for many years. She volunteered at the Rye Elementary School's lunch program and also waitressed at several area restaurants.

Sally had impressive talents that included sewing fashionable clothes for her children and grandchildren, making doll clothes, braided and hooked rugs, stuffed animals, drawing and crocheting. She was also an amazing baker and cook. Her apple pie and homemade dinner rolls were always a staple at many family gatherings. She enjoyed gardening and meticulously maintained her flower beds. She loved reading biographies, playing cards and scrabble. She took great pride in writing letters to friends and family and had beautiful penmanship. Sally especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and patiently shared any of her talents with them when they wanted to learn.

She is survived by her sons, John R. Huston, Dr. Roland E. Huston, Jr. DVM and his partner Sandy Moore; daughter, Paula S. Caswell and her husband David T. Caswell; grandsons, Corey and Devin Huston; granddaughters, Kristin Bolton and her husband Mark, Jennifer Caswell and her partner Graeme Walford, and Sarah Caswell; great-grandson, Max Bolton; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful Pekingese "Nikko".

Sally was predeceased by her husband Roland, sister Pauline King, brothers, Harry Jr., Robert, and John King.
