Obituary Condolences

DURHAM — W. Kent Martling, 86, formerly of Hoitt Drive, Durham, and a resident at Langdon Place of Dover for the past six years, died July 2, 2010, at Langdon Place of Dover.

Born May 20, 1924, in Hempstead, N.Y., he was the son of William L. and Evelyn (Weeks) Martling. In 1947, he graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in economics. Kent also received his law degree from Cleveland Marshall Law School and passed the Bar in Ohio.

During World War II, Kent served in the U.S. Navy and held the rank of Ensign as a supply officer aboard two different ships.

Post college, Kent worked for Burroughs Corp as a salesman and then in Oberlin College's business office.

In 1955, Kent went to work as the assistant treasurer at the University of New Hampshire and then became Treasurer of the University System, retiring in 1987.

While living in Durham, Kent was a very active member of the Community Church of Durham, a member of the Kiwanis of Dover, coached Little League Baseball, and also served as a Trustee of the Dover Children's Home.

From 1987 to 1992, Kent was elected to and proudly served in New Hampshire's House of Representatives, where he was Chairman of the Judicial Committee for two of his three terms.

Kent was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Ruth "Micky" (Webb) Martling. She died Dec. 22, 2009.

He is survived by a son, William H. Martling of Nantucket, Mass.; a daughter, Phyllis Martling Brackett of Durham, N.H.; grandsons, Christopher Brackett and wife, Tara, of Nashua, Gregory Brackett of Lisbon, N.H., W. Kent Martling II of Nantucket, Mass.; great-grandson, Conner Brackett, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Church of Durham, with the Rev. Dr. Mary Westfall, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dover Children's Home, 207 Locust St., Dover, NH 03820. 742-4289.
