KITTERY, Maine - June C. Rodis, 83, died on Tuesday, Feb. 25th at Durgin Pines Nursing Home, Kittery, Maine.
She was born June 20, 1930 in East Vassalboro, Maine on the family farm, the daughter of Benjamin Sr., and Annabel (Ingraham) Cates. She graduated from Gorham State Teacher's College, Gorham, Maine, class of 1952. She also received her Master's degree from the University of Maine, Orono in 1955.
June married Charlie Rodis of Portland, Maine on July 17, 1960, and they were married for 53 years.
June went into a career in Elementary Education including Berwick, Maine; Manchester, Connecticut; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She spent several years away from her profession to raise two children. She finished her teaching career in Kittery, Maine at Mitchell School where she retired in 1992.
June enjoyed traveling with her husband and visited many places Internationally including Greece, the Netherlands, England, Mexico, and Canada (via the trans-Canadian Rail Road). Domestically she traveled to the National Parks, along with many other areas within the United States. She was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) as well attended the Second Christian Congregational Church in Kittery.
She enjoyed spending much time with her two grandsons that were very special to her.
June was a loving wife and mother that always thought so much of her family. She was also very close to both sides of the extended family. She and her husband Charlie hosted family reunions for over 50 years at the family camp on Sabbathday lake in New Gloucester, Maine.
June was from a family of twelve children. She was predeceased by sisters Helen Wyman, Margaret Cates, Marian Murray, Effie Cates, and brothers Maynard, George, and Benjamin.
June is survived by her husband Charlie of Kittery, children Diana (Rodis) Westman and husband Jon Westman of Kittery, son David Charles Rodis of Kittery, and Grandsons Nathan and Noah Westman. She is also survived by siblings Paul Cates and Wife Elisabeth of East Vassalboro, Herbert Cates of East Vassalboro, Carleton Cates and Wife Saundra of Wilmington, Ohio, Ann Higgins of East Vassalboro, and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to acknowledge the many kindnesses and support provided to June from the members of the Second Christian Congregational Church, the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Durgin Pines Nursing Home. The compassion and love has been appreciated by the family.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in April (date to be announced later). Burial will take place at the family cottage on Sabbathday lake later in the spring. Care for the Rodis family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
