Jean W. Zacharias

YORK, Maine - Jean W. Zacharias, 93 died peacefully on March 31, 2014 at her home in the presence of family.

Born in Portsmouth, on August 15, 1920 she was the daughter of Ernest and Willena Byrns. She attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1938. She also studied at UNH in Durham, in 1939 - 1940.

Jean lived with her sister Barbara in Washington D.C. from 1941 - 1944 working as a stenographer at Eastern Airlines. The summer of 1938, while working at York Beach, she met "Dick" L.R. Zacharias. They were married in Los Angeles on March 28, 1944. In 1948 they settled in their life long farmhouse in York, Maine.

Jean was involved in The York Art Association, The York Garden Club and the local Brownie and Girl Scouts a Troops. Jean enjoyed sewing and baking for family and friends. She was an avid gardener, a wonderful artist, and sculptress. She divided and shared perennials with many friends. She was always active and skied into her seventies.

She is survived by her daughter Linda L. Zacharias and her husband Allan "Doc" Anderson of Middleton. Her daughter-in-law Lynn Zacharias of York, Maine, her grandchildren Katherine Lucas and her husband Lorne Lucas, Sarah Zacharias and her husband Stephen Shaw, and J. Abraham Zacharias. Three great- grandchildren Olivia Shaw, Meagan Lucas, and Ray Lucas. Her brother-in-law Eugene Zacharias and his wife Genevieve of Baltimore, Md., and her nieces Ann Dalke and Erica Dodge of Portsmouth. She was predeceased by her husband Dick Zacharias in 2010 and her son John Zacharias in 2013.

Jean leaves a special thank you to York Hospice Care.

A graveside service will be held on May 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. followed by a celebration of her life. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery Maine. The Family requests in lieu of flowers memorial donation be made to the United States Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
