KITTERY, Maine - John Alden Mason Jr, 91, lived happily in retirement on Spruce Creek for 30 years with his wife Wendy, to whom he had been married for 66 years. An avid reader, thinker, writer, and teller of stories, he had a marvelous sense of humor and a great interest in politics, art, literature and the environment.
His young life was a kaleidoscope of fascinating work, adventure and travel; at 16 in 1939 he hitchhiked across the country by himself with 30 dollars in his pocket, at 17 he spent a month in Panama helping his father on an archaeological dig sponsored by the University of
Pennsylvania, and at 18 he joined the Navy and taught naval aviation to pilots during World War II. At 38 he joined the foreign service as a diplomat and spent the next several decades with Wendy and their 4 children in Brazil, Bolivia and Ecuador, interspersed with travels and
adventures throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin America. A man of boundless optimism and curiosity about the world, he saw his later years as an opportunity to do his best to understand and reflect upon what it means to be alive; both in the short span of a single lifetime, and in the broader context of the history of humankind on our very fragile planet Earth. His spirit lives on in his wife Wendy, and in each one of his children who love him; daughters Wendy, Leslie, and Robin, and son John Alden Mason III.
