Kittery - Onil Roy, 75, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, June 14.
Mr. Roy was born in Winslow, Me., in 1939 to Arthur and Leone Roy and graduated from Winslow High School in 1957.
He was an accomplished trombone player in the band and orchestra and was a member of the football, basketball and track teams. Because of his outstanding athleticism, he received a scholarship to Admiral Farragut Naval Academy in Toms River, NJ. While there, he played in the band and was Co-Captain of the football team.
On August 20, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Culpovich. They moved to Presque Isle, Me., where he attended UMPI, graduating in1964 with a BS Degree in Science, Health and Physical Education. That summer he began his chosen career at R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery as an educator and coach.
He earned his MSEd Degree at USM in 1977.
Mr. Roy was a highly respected and devoted science teacher for 34 years. He was an assistant football coach and Head Coach of Boys' Track, leading two teams to State Championship titles. He began the Wrestling Program in 1965.
He was inducted into the Maine High School Coaches Association Roll of Honor in 1991.
Mr. Roy started the Ski Club and the Camera Club. He taught basic photography and photo developing in the Kittery Adult Education Program.
A Class Advisor, he also took charge of Project Graduation for many years.
During his valiant struggle with cancer, initially diagnosed in July, 2011, he received communications from many of his former students, which he dearly appreciated.
Recently he was asked what alternative career would he choose today. He responded, "I would choose to teach and coach again!" He felt most successful whenever he was able to assist any student achieve his/her full potential.
Mr. Roy participated in several community organizations.
After his retirement, he became a member of the SMRGL (Seacoast Military Retirement Golf League) and attended many school activities and athletic events of his beloved grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Nancy, of 53 years and his three daughters and their husbands: Deborah and Marc Jacobs of South Berwick; Karen and Barry Warren of Georgetown, MA; Lisa and Jeff Weeks of Gorham. He was the proud Grandad of Lauren and Mark Haley, Sarah Jacobs, Ben and Jared Warren, Dylan and Tyler Weeks.
He is also survived by three brothers: Rev. James Roy of Winslow, Laurent Roy of West Bath and Jean Roy and wife, Betty, of Atlanta, GA; several brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held at Traip Academy in Kittery, Friday, June 27. Greeting will be from 5 to 7 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by his brother, Father James Roy, at St. John's Church in Winslow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Rice Public Library or The Kittery Historical & Naval Society, both of Kittery.
Care for the Roy family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
