Edward Joseph Labbe

Rollinsford – Edward J. Labbe, 84, of 564 Portland Ave., died unexpectedly on Tuesday July 1, 2014.

Born January 21, 1930 to Emile & Ellen (McManus) Labbe in Dover, N.H. He graduated from Dover High, Class of 1949, where he excelled in sports and went on to attend St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, IN on a full football scholarship, graduating 1959.

While at St. Joseph's College, he met and married his wife, Marcia Mae Jordan of Rensselaer, IN, on July 6, 1957.

Ed's first teaching job was at Rex Mundi High School in Evansville, IN for 2 yrs., where he coached Bob Griese who went on to quarterback for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League. He also taught and coached in Lynn, Mass., for a year before coming to Somersworth High School. At Somersworth, he was an athletic director, teacher and excelled in coaching football, basketball and track for many years and also a few years at Spaulding High School retiring in 1993. During his coaching career, he was awarded Coach of the Year, N.H. SACA Football Coach of the Year, New England Coach of the Year, St. Joseph's College Sports Hall of Fame, N.H. Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Dover Sports Hall of Fame and N.H. Shriner's Football Coach 1983.

Along with these jobs he also a long time referee for both basketball & football, was an official scorer for 29 years for N.H. Basketball Tournaments and was a driver's education instructor for many years.

After retiring he worked seasonally for S.U.R Excavation and later as a groundskeeper at Three Rivers Farm in Dover, NH and spent winters in Jupiter, FL. Ed was never one to sit idle often working before sunrise and long after sunset.

Ed loved to garden, plant trees & flowers, waiting for the first red ripe tomato of summer, which he would eat straight from the garden, watermelon sprinkled with salt. He also enjoyed a good lobster roll, a good old Moxie and a weekly night out to Weathervane's.

Edward is survived by his wife, Marcia, of Rollinsford, NH, four children and seven grandchildren ages 2-32. His daughter Kimberly Plante and spouse Steve Plante of Rochester, NH; Sheryl Montague and spouse Randy Montague of Plymouth, NH; Alan Labbe of Honolulu, HI, and Peter Labbe and spouse Shannan Labbe of Juno Isles, FL; along with his grandchildren Jordan Plante and spouse Shannon of Rochester, NH; Jessica Plante of Rochester, NH and St. Thomas, USVI; Jeremy Plante of Rochester, NH; Kyle Ward of Plymouth, NH; Alexandria "Lexi' Labbe of Honolulu, HI; Maverick and Dakota Labbe of Juno Isles, FL.

He is also survived by his sister, Ret. Col. Elizabeth Labbe of Wellington, FL, and sister-in-law Jackie Labbe of Rollinsford, NH and his beloved dog, Willie, who waited faithfully for him at the door, along with several nieces & nephews.

His parents and siblings Dr. Joseph Labbe, Germaine Davis, Fr. Emile Labbe and Frank Labbe predeceased him.

On behalf of Edward's family, a sincere thank you to Dan Philbrick& Jennifer Philbrick of Three River's Farm, Dover, NH for allowing Ed to be a caretaker of the lawns, trees and flower beds which he was so proud of for over 15 yrs.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 1 pm at St. Mary's Church in Dover.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA per Edward's request. The family also suggests you plant a tree or tend a garden, one of Ed's favorite hobbies.
