Rene J. Renaud

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Rene J. Renaud, 96, of Newburyport, Mass. died peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at his Atria Merrimack Place residence.

Born in Dover, October 7, 1917, to Alphonse and Marie Renaud, he grew up in Dover and was a graduate of St. Charles School and Dover High School.

Rene was a World War II Army veteran serving in the Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 172nd Field Artillery later known as the 941st Field Artillery. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the European theater where he received 5 combat badges. Rene married Jeannette Tondreault of South Berwick, Maine in 1943, and, following the war, he and his wife settled in Dover. He resided with his family in Dover for over 40 years before retiring in 1979 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a carpenter in Shop 64. He and his wife then lived seasonally in St. Petersburg, Fla. for a number of years before moving there permanently. They moved to Newburyport in 2006.

An avid golfer, Rene was a member of Cochecho Country Club in Dover for many years. He was also a member of the New Hampshire Seniors and the Profile Seniors before he moved to Florida where he continued his love for the game. He also loved playing cards, major league baseball as a Boston Braves and later a Red Sox fan, and college football. Rene was a life member of American Legion Post #8 in Dover and a member of VFW Post #2016 in Amesbury, Mass. He and his wife were also long time hospital volunteers in St. Petersburg.

Rene is survived by his sons, Robert (Penny Pension) Renaud of Amesbury, Mass. and David (Patricia) Renaud of Nassau, N.Y. and daughter Denise (Gerald) Hirsch of Ipswich, Mass.; grandchildren Jennifer (Tom) Page, Barbara (Sage) Bray, Daniel (Molly) Renaud, Kevin (Erica Scoppetti) Renaud, Terence (Jennifer Allen) Renaud, Amanda (Hirotaka) Maeda and Laura (Benedict) Bryan; great-grandchildren Elisha, Hannah, Ellie, Ryden and Meghan; along with numerous nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years Jeannette, his brothers Edward, Valmore and Leopold Renaud and his sisters Lillian Fournier, Ida Alie and Jeannette Richard.

Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday, August, 5 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church, 25 Third Street, Dover, and followed by burial at St. Charles Cemetery.
