ELIOT, Maine - Frances E. Bate, 91 formerly a long time resident of Goodwin Road in Eliot, died on August 9, 2014, at the Newton Center in Sanford. Born in Eliot on January 3, 1923, she was a daughter of George and Elizabeth HaleRaitt. She attended local schools graduating from Eliot High School.
She worked during her younger years at the Charter House, Sawyer Mills and during the War she worked for a time at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Frances was well known for her sharp wit and sense of humor. She loved her flower gardens, knitting, photography and was an avid reader.
Her first love was her family. She is survived by her sons George W. and his wife Katherine of Sanford, and Carlton and his wife Patricia of Eliot; grandchildren David Bate and Jennifer Knight as well as step grandchildren Shawn, David and Heather, Katie Nolan Denham, Sandra Nolan Hobart, Kerry Nolan Craft; great grandchildren Avery, Kaylee, Damian, Declin and Miley.
The family would like to express their gratitude to long time caregivers Dr. Thomas Decker, Monique Cote and the staff at the Newton Center.
A graveside service will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 1:00 P.M.in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Eliot United Methodist Church on Rte 236 in Eliot or to the Springvale Public Library, 443 Main Street, Springvale, Maine 04083. Care for the Bate family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
