Dwight Haley Obituary

BARRINGTON ; Dwight Hayes Haley, 85, of 152 Route 9, died peacefully at the Inn of Deerfield.

He was born at home (in his present day home where he lived) on Oct. 5, 1922, the son of William and Gertrude (Hayes) Haley. He attended Barrington's one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Dover High School.

He was one of the first volunteer firemen. He worked in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 37 years. A member of the Centennial Grange for 50 years, he supports the Good Shepherd School and the First Congregational Church. He received an award from the First Congregational Church.

He was active in the Barrington Historical Society, where he held the office of vice president, and was crucial in the opening of the historical society building. Mr. Haley said, "It's a building where our future generations will be able to read and hear about our town." He was named Barrington's Citizen of the Year in 1997 and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Rochester.

Dwight also sold the land to the town of Barrington at a very reasonable price so they could build the middle school, and in return they named the entry way "Haley Drive." Dwight was the owner and operator of the Village Barn, Carhartt clothing and tools store, which he ran for 30 years after his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Shirley (Gibb) Haley; his stepchildren, Richard and Catherine Gibb of Lee and their children, Michael Gibb of Barrington, Neil Gibb of Stratham, Timothy Gibb of Florida, and Rikki and Christopher Gibb of Lee; Linda and Robert LaRoche of Milton and their children, Lauriel Faltin of North Carolina and Katelyn Dow of Raymond; Susan and Bernie Bennett of Rochester and Stephanie Higgins of Milton; Joanne and Dennis Kelley and their children, Gregory and Derek Kelley of Strafford; John Gibb and his sons, Travis, Devin and Justin of Farmington; his 12 great-grandchildren and his brother, Harold Haley and nephews, William Haley and David Haley of Media, Pa.

Gramie-- we are sorry we can't be there, but please know we are thinking of you and sending all of our love. Dwight was a wonderful "grandfather" and "great grandfather" and will be missed by all who knew him. Barrington is lucky to have had such a generous individual care so much for his hometown. All our love,

Shirley and family,
Barrington has lost a great friend with Dwight's passing and we will remember him with fondness and respect. If there was something going on in town you could always be sure that the Haleys were involved and how blessed we have been to be sure of that! You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest assured that Dwight now sleeps in the arms of our Lord.

Dear Shirley & Family
Well the old boys of Barrington are finally back together again. I was blessed to not only know Dwight through my father's ( Frederick E. Drew Jr.) stories but also with my dealing with him in town affairs for which he served so faithfully. I will surely miss having a laugh with him at the “Barn” when reminiscing about the good old days in Barrington. Dwight was an inspiration to me for his quiet and unassuming way of dealing with the worlds problems. I’m not going to ask if you need anything because I’m sure Dwight would have it in the house somewhere, but my thoughts & prayers are with you in this difficult time.
