KITTERY, Maine — Ruth Grover, 83, of Fernald Road in Kittery, died on Jan. 15, 2011, at Durgin Pines on Lewis Road in Kittery following a period of failing health.

Born in Rutland, Vt., on Feb. 21, 1927, she made her home in Rutland until age 13, when she moved with her family to Maine.

She met and married her first husband, Dale G. Payne, and together they began a family and made their home in Kittery for a time, also on Cedar Road in Eliot, and in Pennsylvania for many years, before then traveling back to Maine. In 1974, Dale passed away after 28 years of marriage.

On Feb. 14, 1975, Ruth married Bernard Grover, her loving husband of nearly 36 years. Together they made a home in Eliot for more than 20 years, and in Kittery for the last 15.

Ruth made caring for others her lifetime passion, as well as a loving mother, wife and grandmother; she was a LPN for many years both at York Hospital in York, Pa., and a ward clerk at York Hospital here in York, Maine. She also worked for a time in the maternity ward at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where she was a talented and loving caregiver, especially to the newborn infants she cared for.

Her first love was her family; she also enjoyed her pool, hosting many family events poolside. She loved to ice skate, garden and loved her cats.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Bernard, and family, son, Darrell Payne and his wife, Kathleen Delaney of Hudson, N.H.; daughter, Glenda and her husband, Ron Jette of Eliot, Maine; son, Dana and his wife, Deborah Payne of York, Maine; son, Dale and his wife, Nanci Payne of Brunswick, Maine; stepson, Bryan and his wife, Nancy Grover of Bristol, Conn., and stepson, Kevin and his wife, Anita Grover, also of Bristol, Conn.; grandchildren Tara Buretta, Eric Hathway, Lindsey Weaver, Chad and Todd Flynn, Jennifer Emerton, Rebecca Osgood, Matthew Payne, Lisa Horan, Amy and Brandon Grover; as well as great-grandchildren Stephen, Colby, Sammy, Cassidy, Kendall, Heather, Kayla, Samantha, Shauna, Nicholas, Benjamin and Lucas. She is also survived by her brothers, Norman and his wife, Carol Hall of Lake Katrina, N.Y., and Don and his wife, Carol Hall of Raymond, Maine, and her sister, Joan and her husband, Ed Stubbs of Waterboro, Maine.

Services were held privately for the family, with burial to be held at the family lot in First Parish Cemetery in York, Maine in the spring.

Donations may be made in her memory to the New Hampshire SPCA, PO Box 196 Stratham, NH 03885. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.
