YORK BEACH, Maine — Margaret M. Poulin of York Beach, Maine, died suddenly on Sept. 19, 2011, in Vail, Colo.

She was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Dover, N.H., to Margaret (Harrison) and Bernard J. Murphy. The youngest of three children, she grew up on Essex Street in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1946. Her brother, Raymond, was killed in World War II. She remained close to her oldest brother, Bernard (Bud) Murphy, until his death in 1987.

On Sept. 11, 1954, she married Robert J. Poulin of Sanford, Maine, and moved to Park Ridge, N.J. Peg raised their four children on heavy doses of love and laughter. In character with the indomitable spirit that was her signature, Peg re-enrolled in college in her 40s. She went on to earn her undergraduate and graduate degrees, frequently doing her homework and school assignments alongside her children at the dining room table. She later taught in the Montvale, N.J. school system.

In 1980, Peg and her husband move to York Beach, Maine, where they had purchased the Sunrise Motel and a few years later the Sea Latch Motor Inn on Long Beach Avenue. As General Manager, Peg became a fixture in the office, where she made lasting friendships over the years with her many returning guests. She and her husband spent their summers in Maine and much of their winters skiing and traveling. Peg was an avid skier and a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America for many years, where she enjoyed teaching, especially young children. She enjoyed skiing in the Rocky Mountains, particularly Vail, Colo., where she skied frequently with her family for the past 38 years. She especially enjoyed the many vacations that she shared traveling with her adult children.

Peg Poulin will be remembered for the life she lived and the zeal with which she lived it. She was a tireless mother. Her children could always count on her for a loving embrace, a listening ear and encouragement. Their friends were always welcome at the Poulin home, and it would not take long for them to feel like members of the family. She loved children and took special delight in having a house full of family and friends.

Peg laughed easily and her laughter could fill a room with joy. She had a quick wit and an Irish twinkle in her eye. Family and holiday gatherings were filled with laughter and sing- a-longs with Peg leading the songs from behind the piano. A talented musician, Peg loved to play and took great delight when her brother, Bud, or her children and friends sang along.

In later years she volunteered her musical talents at local senior centers much to the delight of residents.

Sadly she was predeceased by her daughter, Suzanne, who passed away on May, 28, 2011.

She is survived and missed by her husband of 57 years, Robert J. Poulin and children, Robert J. Poulin, Jr. and Maggie Melnic, James R. Poulin, Judy Poulin and Stephen Miles, her beloved grandson, Shawn Poulin, and her nephews, Michael, Thomas and Raymond Murphy and Richard Poulin and Doug Morris, and nieces, Kit Lane and Stacie Dougherty.

A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher's Church in York Maine at 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blanche M. Poulin Nursing Education Fund, at Goodall Hospital, Sanford ME 04073.
