NEWINGTON — Rev. Joseph W. Hanscom, 96, died on May 22, 2012, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Portsmouth, the son of Ralph and Jane (Maitland) Hanscom. After graduating from Portsmouth High School, he furthered his education at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., and Lutheran Seminary in Chicago. After serving 13 years as Pastor of West Suburban Bible Church in Maywood, Ill., he moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. where he served 30 years as Pastor of Central Bible Church. After his retirement from active ministry, he and his wife moved to Spring Hill, Fla. After the death of his wife, the former Melva Kadey of Flint, Mich., he moved back to New Hampshire to be near family.
He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Akerley; two nieces, Dianne Scott and Janice Stuart and her husband Dan; nephew, Joseph Akerley and wife Paula, all of Newington; and four grandnieces and two grandnephews.
There are no visiting hours. Private burial will be held at a later date.
