PORTSMOUTH - Catherine F. Athanasiou, 83, of Portsmouth, died Monday, November 5, 2012 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born and raised in Methuen, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of John and Winifred (Mosscrop) Finneran. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lawrence.
She was formerly employed as a registered nurse at the Bedford Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts and Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen. She also was formerly employed for and served as President of the board of directors of the Visiting Nurses Association and on the Board at Portsmouth Hospital.
Catherine was a Communicant of Corpus Christi Parish at St. James Church and served on the Board of Salvation Army in Portsmouth. She was a member of BETA SIGMA PHI Sorority and the Breast Cancer Support Group in Portsmouth.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Odyssias Athanasiou; son, Arthur Athanasiou and his wife Sally of Barrington; grandchildren, Jameson and Kelly Athanasiou both of Barrington; several nieces and nephews.
Services: Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2012 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Corpus Christi Parish at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Friends invited.
