Robert Edward McDonough

DURHAM - Robert Edward McDonough, 72 of Durham passed away on Feb. 27 following a courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suellen (Carleton) McDonough; his four sons and four daughters-in-law, Bob and Kelly of Durham, N.H., Ralph and Kate of West Newbury, Mass., Mike and Sandy of Lee, and Tom and Ann of Madbury. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Mitchell of Tampa, Fla., and Janice McDonough of Lexington, Mass.; his sisters-in-law Ruthann Carleton of Arlington, Mass., Leigh Carleton of Durham, and brother-in-law Fr. Tom Carleton of Arlington, Mass.

Bob graduated from the Coast Guard Academy where he played football. He served in the United States Coast Guard stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, Long Beach, Calif., and New Bedford, Mass. He attended Boston College receiving his MBA while working for Texas Instruments. He later started his sales and marketing business serving the residential and municipal water and water treatment industries for 30 years. In his "retirement" he managed Grande Hill Farm, served as a volunteer master gardener for Moharimet Elementary School and worked at the Stratham Post Office.

He was a member of the Durham-Great Bay Rotary club, an usher at St. Thomas More and he enjoyed coaching and volunteering in many capacities with the Oyster River youth organization.

For hobbies he enjoyed gardening but his favorite hobby was spending time with his 12 grandchildren: Nicole, Bobby, Mary Kate, Patrick, Mikey, Caroline, Connor, Susie, Erin, Liam, Shannon and Tommy.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the food pantry at St. Thomas More (6 Madbury Road, Durham, N.H.), the Durham-Great Bay Rotary (Durham, N.H.), Amy's Treats (Seacoast Cancer Center, Dover, N.H.) or the Neely House (camneelyfoundation.org).

Friends and family may call from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013 at the Purdy Memorial Chapel, 2 Concord Road, Rt. 4, Lee, N.H.
