SANFORD - Albert (John) Libby died on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Monarch Center in Saco.
He was born on April 10, 1922, in Lebanon, the son of the late Albert and Blanche (Bowdothan) Libby. He attended local schools in East Rochester, N.H.
John began working in the East Rochester mills and also worked with his father in the logging business before he gained employment at the South Portland Shipyard.
John enlisted in the Marine Corps in October of 1942 and trained at Parris Island in South Carolina. He was assigned as a radio operator for 14th Artillery of the 4th Division. John was a veteran of four assault landings in the islands of Saipan, Tinian and the island of Iwo Jima.
John witnessed the famous raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and was able to come home to marry Irene Gagnon, of Sanford. Together, John and Irene raised two sons. John was able to take advantage of the GI bill and became a foreman and finish carpenter, building many houses around the Sanford area.
John is survived by his two sons, Donald and Ronald Libby, both of Sanford; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Libby; a sister, Norma Tredwell, of East Rochester, N.H.; a brother, Dana Libby, of Sanford; and two grandchildren, Andrea Libby and Jana Spence, and one great-grandchild, Jonah, all whom live in Dallas, Texas.
A Catholic Graveside Service with full military honors will be held later this spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. "Semper Fi."
