Everett W. 'Bill' Bennett, Jr.

GREENLAND - Everett W. "Bill" Bennett, Jr., 88 of Post Road, Greenland, died, Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Bradford, Mass.

He was born on April 1, 1924, in Portsmouth, a son of Everett and Irene (Smith) Bennett.

Bill was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1942, and attended the Correspondence Technical School in Chicago. Ill.

He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 with the Sea Bees during World War II.

Prior to his retirement, Bill was employed at Maxam Construction and E.L. Patterson Builders. He was a member of Local 1996 for 45 years.

Bill was a charter member of the Greenland Fire Department, member of the Greenland Veterans, former member of the Greenland Planning Board, and member and former trustee of the Great Cove Boat Club. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed boating, fishing and gardening.

Besides his wife, Carolyn M. (Dockham) Bennett, survivors include a daughter, Joan Davis of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Shirley C. Sleve of Bath, N.Y.; seven step-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Dowling of Kittery, Maine and Rebecca Radford of Georgetown, Mass.; several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his stepson, Edwin E. "Gene" Howe in 2006.

Services: Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held at the Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road, Greenland, on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Greenland Veterans, PO Box 13, Greenland, N.H. 03840.
