KITTERY, Maine - Diana M. Taylor, 81, of Norton Road in Kittery, died on April 22, 2013 at her home surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Portsmouth, on May 5, 1931, she was the daughter of George E. and Dorothy D. (Bassnett) Essex. She was raised in Kittery with her sister Ruth and brother George (Ted), attending local schools, including R.W. Traip Academy.
On July 1, 1949, she married her loving husband James A. Taylor and together they built a home and raised eight wonderful children just steps from where she grew up on Norton Road. This closeness allowed her parents to be an important part of her children's lives.
After her youngest child entered school, she spent many years working with children in the lunch program at Mitchell School, Kittery Point. Throughout the years, Diana opened her home to 16 foster children, many of them experiencing being a part of a loving family for the first time.
Diana was a nurturer, caring for children, her family and the beautiful gardens she grew. Her vegetables fed her family and many others, especially during the harsh winters. Her flowers adorned her place of worship, First Baptist Church of Kittery Point, she so dearly loved for many years. FBC was an integral part of her life, which she shared with her brothers and sisters in Christ.
Diana made many pairs of mittens through the years, which she gave to her 24 grandchildren every winter. Anyone who visited her home on Wednesday's or Saturday's each week enjoyed the wonderful smell and taste of her famous homemade bread.
Diana is survived by her loving family: her husband James of Kittery, Maine; children: Linda (Kittery, Maine), Jim (York, Maine), Melanie (Rochester), Sandy (Greenville, Tenn.), Glen (Antrium), Susan (Collegeville, Pa.) and Ross (Yarmouth, Maine); sister Ruth Prosser (Albion, Maine); brother Ted Essex (Kittery, Maine); 24 Grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also surrogate grandmother to many others. She is predeceased by her parents and daughter Shelley.
