Barbara Fernald

ELIOT, Maine - Barbara Ellen Fernald. 72 of Eliot, Maine passed away on Saturday August 17, 2013, at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover with her husband and daughter by her side.

Barbarba was born in Kittery, December 16, 1940, the daughter of Angus and Grace Stewart and lived in Eliot all of her life.

She attended Eliot schools graduating from Eliot High School in 1959. She furthered her education at Washington State Teachers College in Machias Maine 1959-1964.

Barbara loved her camp at Great East lake and her Golden Retrievers that she had throughout the years.

She was a substitute teacher and volunteer at Eliot Elementary School for 12 years, a Girl Scout leader and Treasure of the Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter, Order of the Easten Star, a Member of the board of directors at Baran Place, a Volunteer at Footprints Food Pantry since 1995 serving as the Executive Director of Footprints from 2000 to 2013.

Barbara, felt that her calling was to help others, and she showed that through her work at Footprints Food Pantry. As Executive Director she helped guide volunteers to help provide food for people in need of a helping hand. Because of Barbara, peoples lives were changed for the better.

Barbara was awarded the Fabyan Drake award as the town of Eliot's citizen of the year for her work at Footprints. She also was honored for her work by the John F Hill Grange in Eliot and the Kittery Rotary Club.

She is survived by her Husband Roland Fernald, Son Glenn Fernald, Daughter Pamela Keefer, grandsons Jeremy MacRitchie, Travis Keefer, Cole, and Declan Fernald, her brother James Stewart, niece Robin Stewart and many many friends too numerous to list.

She was proceeded in death by her father Angus in 1972 and her mother Grace in 2012.

Friends may visit with Barbara's Family on Thursday August 22, 2013 from 5-8 p.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine. A funeral will be celebrated on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot with the Rev. Patty Marsden officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Barbara's name to Footprints Food Pantry Box 246, Kittery, ME 03904. Care for Barbara's family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
