PORTSMOUTH - Cheryl B. Nelson, 65, of Portsmouth, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Cheryl was born November 18, 1947, in Rutland, Vermont. She was the daughter of the late Philip C. and Irene (Wood) Buswell.
Cheryl was employed at Portsmouth High School for over 30 years where she worked as a cook in the Dietary Department. She was well known for her sense of humor, generosity, creativity and humility. She loved seeing kids that had gone through the school years later come up to her and tell how much she meant to them.
Honoring her late husband Phillip C. Nelson, a longtime Physical Education teacher at Portsmouth High School and accomplished painter, Cheryl started a scholarship fund to help support students entering an art college. She felt honored to award this scholarship every year to a deserving student.
Cheryl is survived by her daughter, Tanya L. Holmes, of Portsmouth, step-children Suzanne (Nelson) Mongeon, of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Timothy Nelson, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, grandchildren Chase, Devon, Haley and Chloe, sister-in-law Rhiis Buswell, nephew Shaun Buswell, niece Rachael (Buswell) Minnihan, Aunt Margaret Wood, several cousins, great nieces and nephews.
Her brother, Gary S. Buswell, predeceased her in 2010.
