BOXBOROUGH, Mass., - Lois A. (Flygare) Greene, 82, a longtime resident of Boxborough, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Massachusetts General Hospital with her family by her side on Sat. Feb. 8, 2014.
Lois was born on May 2, 1931. She was raised in Gloucester, Mass., the daughter of the late Oscar and Martha (Spry) Flygare. Lois graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretary School of Boston in 1950. She then went on to work at General Electric in Somersworth, N.H, and later at W.R. Grace in Acton, Mass. After miraculously surviving cancer at age 50, Lois became a tireless advocate for the , where she devoted herself to educating young people of the dangers of smoking.
In 1955 she married Patrick J. Greene Jr. of Dover, N.H. He remained at her side upon her passing after a loving 58 years of marriage. Since moving to Boxborough in 1963, Lois has been a member of the United Church of Christ of Boxborough. This loving community meant so much to Lois and her family.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick, and two sons, Jeffrey Greene of North Andover, Mass., and Brian Greene and his wife Patricia of Pepperell, Mass. Lois also has four wonderful grandchildren, Phillip and Jennifer Greene of North Andover, Stephanie Greene of State College, Pa., and Meagan Greene of Providence, R.I. Lois is also lived on by her brother Jack Flygare of Lubbock, Texas, and sister Marcia Garofano and her husband Frank of Somersworth, N.H, as well as many friends, nieces, nephews and extended family members. Lois was predeceased by her brother Robert Flygare.
Calling hours will be on Wed. Feb. 12, from 4-8 p.m., at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave., (Rte 111) Acton, Mass. A funeral service will be held on Thurs., Feb. 13, at 10 a.m., in The United Church of Christ (Rte 111) in Boxborough. Burial will be in Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester, Mass., following the service.
