James Bowne Obituary

James Donald Bowne Sr., 86, of Emmitsburg died peacefully Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Gettysburg Hospital in Gettysburg, PA.

Born January 3, 1927 in Cheesequake, NJ, he was the eleventh child of the late Clyde and Susanna Schulmeister Bowne. He was the husband of Mary Sanders Bowne, his wife of 57 years.

Don was an accountant for Mobil Oil Company for several years. He was the Storeroom Supervisor of the Dietary Department at St. Joseph Provincial House in Emmitsburg for 18 years. He was active at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg. Don was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War with the 110th Infantry, 28th Division as Company G Supply Sergeant.

He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, raising tulips, feeding and caring for wild birds, and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, and was a fan of Jeff Gordon. During his military service in Germany, he became interested in skiing and enjoyed the sport for many years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, James D. Bowne, Jr. and wife Karen of New Market, MD, and Frederick W. Bowne and wife Ginny of Carroll Valley, PA; sister, Katherine Eifert of Matawan, NJ; brother, Amos Bowne of Old Bridge, NJ; grandchildren, Steven and Katelyn Bowne of Carroll Valley, PA, and Derek and Andrew Bowne of New Market, MD; step-grandchildren, Shawn Wivell of Chambersburg, PA, and Anthony Wivell and wife Jennifer of Carroll Valley, PA; step great-grandson, Devin Wivell; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by son, Kevin T. Bowne; brothers, Clyde, Milton, and Fred Bowne; and sisters, Olive Burlew, Elsie Segar, Florence Russell, Bertha Walling, and Mildred Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 25 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St, Emmitsburg, MD with the Rev. Charles Krieg, C.M. as celebrant. Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD. The Rosary will be shared at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St, Emmitsburg, MD, 21727.

The passing of Uncle Don is truely a great loss to the whole family and I will always cherish fond memories of him at family gatherings always with a smile on his face. You have my deepest sympathy in this sorrowful time.
