Howard Franklin Buhrman, 98, of Wolfsville Rd. Smithsburg, MD passed away Saturday September 21, 2013 at his home.
Born September 13, 1915 at Mt. Zion in Washington County MD, he was the son of the late Grover and Annie (Leather) Buhrman. He was the husband of Miriam (Leatherman) Buhrman, whom he married on February 14, 1943.
He was a graduate of Gettysburg College class of 1937 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He worked at Glenn L. Martin Co. in Middle River, MD for 8 years, after which he served in the United States Navy
as a Seamen First Class during WWII
from 1945 to 1946. For 27 years he worked as a draftsman for Pangborn Corporation, from which he retired in 1980.
He had a lifelong passion of hiking and he walked as far as he could every day. In 1981 he completed his goal by hiking all 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail, at the age of 65. During their retirement years, Howard and Miriam traveled extensively in the US, traveling to every state except New Mexico. They also traveled to Europe during this time.
Howard was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Wolfsville, MD. He served in various capacities, including Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the Church Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister, Dorothy (Buhrman) Enyart, and his son Nevin whom he lost at the age of 23 and whom he loved very much.
Howard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Miriam, his five children; son Charles and wife Harriet of Hanover, PA; son David and wife Cheryl of British Columbia, Canada; son Richard and Dr. Sheri Hild of Middletown, MD; son Nelson and wife Linda of Wolfsville, MD and daughter Rachel of Waynesboro, PA; also 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Margaret (Peg) Sigler and brother Joe Buhrman.
Services will be held Saturday September 28, 2013 at 10:00am at St. Mark's Lutheran Church 12704 Wolfsville Rd. Smithsburg, MD with Pastor David Howell officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Church Cemetery with military honors given by Amvets post 10 and the Marine Corp League of Hagerstown. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8pm at J.L. Davis Funeral Home 12525 Bradbury Ave. Smithsburg, MD.
