Mr. Lew McClellan Gladhill, 91, of Damascus, died at home, Dec. 6, 2012.
He was the husband of Goldie Snapp Gladhill for 58 years, married Aug. 4, 1945.
Born June 12, 1921, in Browningsville, he was the son of the late Franklin S. and Mollie W. Gladhill.
In his early years, he worked with siblings on the family farms doing various jobs such as tilling land, planting and harvesting crops, clearing land for farming, helping with family butchering and working in the family mill race. He peddled meat to neighboring farms in the Frederick and Montgomery County areas.
After school, he worked in partnership with brothers Upton and Buck in the John Deere farm machinery business. In 1946 he opened the Gladhill Meat Market and remained in business for 63 years.
He was part owner of the Friendship Livestock Auction Market of Howard County. Soon after, he began a livestock feedlot system on the family farm near Browningsville. He raised quality cattle and processed them at his local slaughter plants. These meats were used in his family store of Damascus.
He was one of the original members of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department and provided meat for the local fire department carnival for many years. He was also a charter member of the Damascus Rotary club
for many years. As a businessman, he aided many local organizations serving the Damascus community.
Surviving are three children: Larry L. Gladhill and wife Sharon, Bruce M. Gladhill and wife Jan, and Cindy L. Loweth and husband AI; 10 grandchildren: Shawna Sanders and husband Kyle, Jeff Gladhill and wife Jenifer, Amy Vallarino and husband Michael, John Gladhill and wife Joanna, Katie Mount and husband Kenneth, Lisa Grace Gladhill, Christopher Hunt and wife Tammy, Jennifer Tolbert and husband Wayne, Patricia Owens and husband Brian, lan Loweth and wife Erin; 17 great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Jonah, Julia and Sadie Gladhill, Micahel and Maggie Vallarino, Ryan and Sarah Gladhill, Juliet and Lucas Mount, Taylor, Tyler and Christa Hunt, Nate Tolbert, Emily and Wyatt Owens, and Conner Loweth: one sister, Georgia Cornor of Adamstown: and one brother, Frank Gladhill and wife Bess, of Monrovia.
Mr. Gladhill was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Gladhill; his brothers, Upton and Bernard; sisters, Mary Emma McKenzie, Lillian Geisler and Olive Stup; and one great-grandchild, Caleb Gladhill.
Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 14, at Molesworth-Williams P.A., Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus, MD. 20872. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, at the funeral home, with pastor Irvin Stapf officiating.
