Beatrice McClain Obituary

Mrs. Beatrice Hatcher McClain, 84, of Lovettsville, Va., died Monday, Sept. 17, in Lovettsville.

She was the wife of the late Robert P. McClain.

Born June 14, 1917, in Floyd County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Arthur L. and Sally Gay Hall Hatcher.

Mrs. McClain was a civic leader in Lovettsville, promoting the establishment of Lovettsville Fire & Rescue, the town library, and museum.

She and her husband had owned and operated McClain's Grocery in Lovettsville for over 50 years. During the 1960s she donated land for drinking water wells to the town of Lovettsville, and was instrumental in making textbooks free for students in Loudoun County.

Surviving are five children, Brenda M. Deener and husband Herb of Woodsboro, Robert P. McClain II, and Patricia M. Hild and husband Herb, all of Lovettsville, Ann M. Hummer and husband Kenneth of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Kenny W. McClain of Knoxville; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven brothers and sisters, Arthur L. Hatcher Jr. and wife Daphne of West Boxford, Mass., Fred Hatcher and wife Carol of Harpers Ferry, Pershing Hatcher of Frederick, Vivian Hatcher and Nell Jacobs, both of Lovettsville, Theata Lawrence and husband Billy of Saginaw, Texas, and Ruth Sutphin of Berryville, Va.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Brown Funeral Home, Broadway at Locust, Lovettsville, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Lovettsville.
